For those of you on an intermittent fasting (IF) diet and your focus is on gaining muscle and losing fat, then by all means you should consider taking EAAs before and during exercise.
You can take EAAs during your fast, but it's best to do so towards the end, such as 20 - 30 minutes pre-workout. This is considering that you may be exercising as early in the day as possible, and that you will also follow-up your workout with your first post fast meal.
To build muscle, you need to exercise, specifically, resistance training, and that resistance needs to be progressively hard (and safe).
Muscle Cells (Myocytes) are one of the most metabolically active group of cells in the body. During exercise, there is a constant breakdown of muscle-protein (amino acids) by a process of oxidation inside the myocyte. The more active the Myocyte, the greater the level of oxidative damage (ie, muscle-protein breakdown) that occurs. In other words, when you exercise your body breaks down muscle. This is of course is the opposite of what we want to happen, right?
Muscle repair and growth take place during recovery, or, after exercise when your body is (essentially) at rest. If your goals are to preserve and/or build muscle, then steps need to be taken to help maximize post-exercise recovery. This can be achieved in part by consuming EAAs before and/or during exercise.
Research tells us that exercise generates a lot of oxidative damage to muscle. Moreover, research demonstrates that amino acid requirements increase during exercise.
